A prophet of the exile, Daniel wrote from the heart of Babylon. The Northern Kingdom, Israel, had been captured by Assyria in 722 BC. Just over one hundred years later the Babylonians took the Southern Kingdom, including its capital Jerusalem. God had put up with disobedience and rebellion from Israel for five hundred years but now judgment had fallen. Although Daniel deals often with history throughout these chapters, his book primarily focuses on prophecy and the prediction of future events.
